If highlight clips flatter forwards, it's a very different story for goalkeepers. So for those fans following Joe Hart's adventures in Italy through social media snippets it's likely that only the lowlights of his loan spell at Torino have captured the attention.

There was the weak punch on his debut away to Atalanta that resulted in a goal and a 2-1 defeat. The critics revelled in that one. The following month there was the spilled through-ball that rebounded off Inter's Mauro Icardi for the striker to score.

In November, the England goalkeeper fumbled a cross against Cagliari that required goal-line technology to spare him further embarrassment. More recently, Hart was the fall-guy when a puddle undid the Torino defence against Empoli.


Serie A errors leading to goals among goalkeepers with 10 appearances or more

Ultimately, according to Opta, the long-time Manchester City No 1 has been responsible for just the two errors leading to goals. That puts him among a group of six goalkeepers to have made multiple mistakes in Serie A this season but it does not tell the whole story.

Torino coach Sinisa Mihajlovic says that Hart's "presence makes the rest of the team feel more confident" and team-mate Joel Obi claims that the 29-year-old's mere presence has "changed the mood in the dressing room".

He is a popular figure and that's a view confirmed by speaking to Gianluca Oddenino, club correspondent for the Turin-based newspaper La Stampa. "The news that the England goalkeeper plays in Turin is still resounding now," Oddenino tells Sky Sports.

"He is in the hearts of Torino fans and is a big character in this team. Everyone likes Hart. He is very popular with the players and the fans - always helpful with everyone, fun socially and always smiling, even if he is conceding a lot of goals because of Torino's defence."

Matteo Pedrosi, Torino supporter and journalist with Corriere dello Sport, agrees. "Hart is having a good season in Italy, often making decisive saves despite the many goals conceded by Torino," Pedrosi tells Sky Sports. "They have the fourth worst defence in the league."

It is true that it is not always easy being the goalkeeper at a club that, despite being in the top half of Serie A, has conceded 46 goals this season. As a result, Hart's stats are not particularly impressive - he cannot compete with the top goalkeepers for clean sheets.

But his reputation remains intact. The famous Gazzetta dello Sport player ratings give him an average mark of 6.25 this season. That might not sound too remarkable but it is superior to Pepe Reina and even the great Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

So where does Hart really rank among Serie A goalkeepers? "After Buffon and Gianluigi Donnarumma, the two real phenomenal players, it is Hart and Samir Handanovic on the list of special goalkeepers in the league," says Oddenino.

Pedrosi adds: "In Italy there are so many good goalkeepers. If you were to place Hart in a hypothetical ranking system, we could put him after Buffon and Donnarumma, but at the same level as Reina, Handanovic and Wojciech Szczesny."

The prospect of Hart staying in Turin seems unlikely. "Hart's signature is too expensive for the club and City will never accept another loan on the current terms," says Pedrosi. With that in mind, the club have already acquired Vanja Milinkovic-Savic from Lechia Gdansk.

But Hart is on course to return to England better for the experience and having impressed in Italy both on and off the field. Perhaps those brief video clips will still resonate but this is the bigger picture that will really endure for those who have followed his adventure in Turin.

I get the Hart loan, I don't get the loan plus option to buy not being there ?

If he didn't fancy us (even after spouting love) then he's only putting himself in the shop window..

If he has a blinding year city might want mega bucks..

Harts hoping Pep Fuck's up and loses his job, then he goes back?

Adrian ain't going to play 2nd 3rd fiddle, so he's probably off..

Maybe leaving us with just Randolph next season ??

We got two goalkeepers one with nothing about him quite as a mouse with personality like a bag of chips the other cant use his hands wishing to stop every ball with his feet for some crazy stupid reason.

Joe Hart is a top goalkeeper lots to prove a great signing we should all embrace it.

A8 - I would forgive them if we'd signed him on a permanent deal or the loan had the option to become permanent.

As it is, it's looking like he'll be off in 12 months time regardless. In which time we'll be screwed if Hart has a good season because he'll no doubt leave to go back to City or join a better club and we'll be left looking for a replacement goalkeeper - and we all know how hard it is for our owners to find us quality players in positions where we are desperate!

For me, without the option to buy this changes what would have been a great signing into a disappointing and short-sighted one.

It does seem a strange deal, will we be the only PL club whose first choice keeper is a loanee?

Still, we needed a better keeps anyway, if he doesn't sign on a perm later we will just have to look for another number 1. Maybe that's the plan anyway, but they didn't want to use any of this summers budget on a keeper.

On one hand, great signing. He wants to go to the world cup and will no doubt be a cracking keeper for us.

On the other hand, no option to buy? Then what's the fucking point where we end up looking for another goal keeper this time next year when Hart has fucked off?

Not sure if an option to buy has any relevance in a loan like this. Ok you may be at the front of the queue but what if there were whispers that a "bigger" club were after him next season or he just didn't want to stay? "If" he did want to stay and we wanted to keep him then there will just be a bidding war with other parties but lets all just see how this season goes.

Could turn out to be a pivotal signing, a vastly better keeper than both Adrian and Randolph.
With Zabaleta signing too our defence should be much improved

I would imagine Hart thinks Pep might get the push if he doesn't deliver this year and that may pave the way for a playing return to Man City. I would imagine that is his preference rather than a permanent relocation to London.
Loan is a good deal for everyone.

Happy with this, although didn’t think it was a priority, as many have said, Hart has something to prove and will want to be our number 1 in Russia.

Apparently he has always loved West Ham! Does make me cringe a bit when players come out with this stuff, had he gone anywhere else im sure he would have trotted out a similar line.

When you think that Zaza, Calleri and Tore cost us 8m, 6m and 4m respectively then 4.5m for Hart is a decent loan deal financially. Improves the first team for a year without taking away too much of the transfer/wages budget that could be better spent on a couple of quality forwards.

Alex - You'd keep Randolph over Adrian?

I think Randolph may be more happy to warm the bench, and cover for cup games and injuries than Adrian, but as someone said, they might both want out.
